Many homeowners are ready to upgrade but aren’t quite sure what the right garage door looks like for their home. That’s where knowing the main types of garage doors comes in handy. At Next Level Garage Service, we’ve worked with every style, size, and setup—and we’ve laid it all out here to help you weigh your options.

Main Residential and Commercial Garage Door Types

1. Sectional Garage Door

Sectional garage doors, also known as sectional doors or overhead garage doors, are made of multiple horizontal panels that are hinged together. As the door opens, those panels move along a curved track and tuck neatly along the garage ceiling.

Most garage doors today are built this way because it makes them easy to open with a garage door opener, even in tight spaces. Since they don’t swing outward like some older garage door types, you don’t have to worry about leaving a few feet of clearance in your driveway. This makes sectional doors ideal for both residential garage door types and some commercial buildings with limited overhead space.

They’re also great for energy efficiency, especially when you choose insulated steel garage doors with polyurethane foam between the layers. That makes a big difference in Oklahoma summers when you’re trying to manage the temperature inside your home.

2. Tilt Up or Canopy Garage Door

Tilt-up garage doors come in two styles: canopy garage doors and retractable tilt-up doors. Both of these use a single panel rather than hinged sections.

With a tilt-up canopy design, the door opens outward and up, forming a small overhang or “canopy” when fully open. It’s a simple mechanism and one that was common in mid-century homes. The tradeoff, however, is that the door has to protrude past the garage opening, so you’ll need extra space in your driveway to use it comfortably.

A retractable tilt-up door, on the other hand, slides back fully into the garage without creating an overhang. It’s a bit more complex mechanically, and it takes up more garage ceiling space than a sectional garage door, but it doesn’t interfere with the area out front.

Some homeowners still like these doors for their classic look, especially when paired with traditional or retro architectural style homes. Just be sure to measure carefully and plan for how much room you’ll need, both inside and out.

3. Roll-Up Garage Door

If your garage doesn’t have a lot of room overhead, roll-up garage doors (also called roll-up doors) are worth considering. These are typically found in commercial buildings like warehouses or fire stations, but we’ve installed them in plenty of residential settings too.

Instead of running on a track and lying flat when open, these doors are made of narrow steel slats that roll into a tight coil above the opening. That makes them perfect for garages with limited overhead space or where ceiling-mounted storage and lighting would otherwise be in the way.

Roll-up garage doors handle extreme temperatures, wind, and frequent use with minimal upkeep. If you’re after something ultra‑durable and low maintenance, especially for a workshop or utility space, this is a smart option.

4. Side Hinged Garage Door

Side-hinged garage doors open like old-fashioned barn doors, swinging outward from the center. You’ll mostly find these in custom homes or spaces where someone wants a very traditional or European look. They’re usually made from wood or steel doors, and they can be a great fit for detached garages or carriage-style structures where the ceiling is sloped or exposed. Since they don’t rely on tracks or spring systems, they’re also quite easy to maintain.

Just keep in mind: you’ll need a lot of room in front of the garage so the doors can open fully. If your driveway’s short or on a hill, side-hinged doors might not be the most practical choice.

5. Sliding Garage Door

Also known as sliding garage doors or slide-to-the-side models, these work a lot like a barn door on a track, except horizontal. The panels slide along the side garage walls, instead of lifting overhead. They’re handy in garages where you don’t have enough overhead space for a traditional door or where ceiling-mounted storage is a priority. They’re also visually striking, often showing up in modern garage doors or custom homes where the homeowner wants something different.

The downside is that you lose some wall space, since the door needs a clear path to move along the inside of the garage walls. But if you don’t need that space for storage, it’s a great pick for your home.

Garage Door Styles

Now that you know how the doors work, let’s talk about how they look. Here are some of the most common styles homeowners in Oklahoma City are choosing:

Carriage House Garage Door

Carriage house garage doors give you that classic look of old barn doors, but with the convenience of modern operation. Most of the time, these are actually sectional doors with decorative overlays, faux hinges, and handles that make them look like hinged doors.

They’re a great choice if your home has a rustic or cottage-style design. Clopay offers plenty of options here, and we often help customers customize them with decorative hardware, unique wood species, or custom windows. They can also help boost curb appeal if you’re looking to sell or just want your home to stand out a little more.

Traditional Garage Door

If you’re after something timeless, traditional garage doors (especially traditional raised panel designs) are still one of the most popular choices. They’re clean, symmetrical, and work well with just about any home style you’ll find in Oklahoma City.

Most traditional garage doors are made of steel and come with different insulation options, which help reduce energy costs and improve noise reduction. They’re easy to install, easy to clean, and don’t require much upkeep, which is why many homeowners go this route.

Modern Garage Door

Modern garage doors often feature large glass panels, aluminum frames, and smooth finishes. These are built for homes with contemporary architecture, especially those with sharp angles, flat roofs, or open layouts.

If you’re trying to maximize natural light inside your garage because you use it as a studio, workshop, or fitness space, these doors are a great way to do that. You can even get tinted or frosted options to let in daylight without sacrificing privacy. Clopay has multiple garage door offers in this style, and we can help you choose one that balances looks with performance in extreme temperatures.

Garage Door Designs

Once you’ve settled on the function and style, it’s time to look at the details that bring everything together: materials, insulation, finishes, and accessories.

Steel garage doors are by far the most common today. They’re strong, come in a variety of colors and finishes, and offer excellent temperature control when insulated. They’re also easier to maintain than real wood, especially in Oklahoma weather.

Other options include:

  • Wood species like cedar or redwood, which offer unmatched warmth but require sealing every couple of years.
  • Aluminum and glass panels, perfect for modern designs, though they don’t insulate as well.
  • Composite or faux wood, which mimics real wood grain with lower upkeep.

You can also customize your garage door design with decorative hardware, window inserts, and finishes that match your architectural style. It’s one of the easiest ways to tie your garage into the rest of your home’s exterior.

Garage Door Openers

As a LiftMaster dealer, we offer openers that use belt drives, chain drives, or screw drives—all of which are compatible with most garage doors.

  • Chain drives are sturdy and budget-friendly, but louder.
  • Belt drives are quiet and great for attached garages.
  • Screw drives are fast and low-maintenance, but not ideal in extreme temperatures.

Modern openers come with smartphone connectivity, backup batteries, and motion-sensing lights. All of these make life a little easier and safer, especially if your garage door is your main entry point.
