Just like anything mechanical, garage door parts can wear out, misalign, or eventually break. If you’re like most OKC homeowners, then you’ve likely encountered some of the most common garage door problems over the years. But do you know the best fixes for each issue?

At Next Level Garage Service, we’ve been helping homeowners sort out garage door issues for years. Below, we’ve broken down the most frequent problems we’re called for, what causes them, and what you can do about each garage door problem.

Most Common Garage Door Issues and What to Do

It doesn’t take long for a garage door to remind you just how many moving parts it has. Cables, springs, tracks, and sensors are all important for functionality, and when one goes out, the whole system feels it. Here are the issues Oklahoma City homeowners run into the most and what you can do to solve them.

1. Garage Door Won’t Open or Close Properly

One of the first signs that something’s wrong is when your garage door won’t open all the way, won’t fall into a closed position, or stops midway. While this often requires a simple minor repair, occasionally, it can point to a bigger problem.

Solution

Check if the power supply is working properly or if the breaker tripped. Then, check your wall switch and remote, since dead or weak remote batteries can cause issues.

If the power’s good and the remote works, try using the manual release, which is the cord you pull when you lose power. If it opens smoothly by hand, your issue might be with the garage door opener or the garage door motor. But if the door feels heavy or sticks, you could have a problem with the garage door springs or tracks (more on this later).

2. Garage Door Opener Won’t Respond to the Remote or Keypad

You hit the button, and nothing happens. In many cases, the potential causes are dead remote batteries, a keypad that needs reprogramming, or a power supply issue with the opener itself. Other times, it could be misaligned or blocked safety sensors preventing the signal from going through, or even wiring problems inside the opener.

Solution

Remove the batteries and replace them with new ones. Then double-check the opener’s antenna to make sure it’s not damaged or pointing the wrong way. If you’re using a wireless keypad, it might need to be reprogrammed. Refer to the owner’s manual for your specific opener brand, or give us a call if you’re not sure how.

Also, check that the wall control panel isn’t in “lock” mode. That feature helps with security, but it can create confusion if you hit it by accident. We also recommend replacing remote batteries at least once a year to avoid this common problem.

3. Worn or Broken Garage Door Springs

Garage door springs carry the entire weight of the door, so it’s no surprise they’re one of the most common problems with garage doors. A broken spring usually means the door won’t open at all, or it opens a few inches and slams shut.

Torsion springs run along the top of the door, while extension springs stretch along the tracks on either side. Both types of door springs are under a lot of tension, so if one snaps, you’ll often hear a loud bang, like a firecracker. Ultimately, these broken springs are not something to take lightly.

Solution

Replacing garage door springs is not something we recommend doing yourself. These springs are tightly wound and can cause serious injury if released suddenly, meaning only a trained technician should handle spring repairs. We offer high-cycle replacements to help reduce noise and improve durability in garage door systems that see a lot of daily use.

4. Something Is Blocking the Garage Door’s Path

Garage doors are designed to stop and reverse if something is in the door’s path. That’s great for safety, but it can be frustrating when it triggers unexpectedly. Modern garage door openers use photo eye sensors mounted a few inches above the floor, and if these safety sensors are dirty, misaligned, or knocked loose, the door may not close properly.

Solution

Use a soft cloth to wipe the lenses and make sure both sensors are aimed directly at each other. If one light is blinking, it likely needs adjustment so it’s pointed in the right direction. Clear obstructions from the tracks and close the door again to test.

5. Garage Door Is Making Strange Noises

Garage doors aren’t exactly quiet, but they shouldn’t be excessively noisy, either. If you hear grinding noises, rattling, or excessive noise during use, it often means something needs attention.

Solution

Dry or dirty moving parts, loose hardware, or worn-out rollers are usually to blame. Spray silicone lubricant on all the moving parts, like the rollers, hinges, and springs, to ensure smooth operation.

Also, tighten loose hardware, including loose bolts and loose nuts along the track, hinges, and brackets. Don’t forget to inspect for loose parts in general. If the noise continues, replacing old metal rollers with nylon ones can help reduce noise and promote smoother operation.

6. The Garage Door Opens, Then Reverses

If your garage door opens or closes partway and then suddenly reverses, it’s likely an issue with the safety sensors or the opener’s limit settings.

Solution

Clean the photo eye sensors and make sure they’re aligned. Then, check the door’s path for anything that might be in the way. If everything looks clear, the close-limit or open-limit settings may need to be adjusted. These settings tell the garage door opener when to stop moving, so if they’re off, the opener might think the door hit an obstruction and reverse. You’ll find limit settings on most openers marked as small dials or screws. If you’re unsure, consult the owner’s manual or call a garage door technician for help.

7. Garage Door Is Off Track

A crooked or stuck door might mean you’re dealing with an off-track door. If the rollers slip out of the garage door track, the system can’t operate safely or properly.

Solution

Look at the tracks on both sides. Are the rollers still in place? Is anything bent or out of alignment? These types of door problems often happen after a vehicle hits the door or when cables or rollers break.

Never try to force the door manually in this state. An off-track door can cause serious damage or injury. Call a professional technician to realign the garage door track, replace any broken components, and get your garage door working properly again.

8. Slow or Uneven Movement

If the door moves unevenly or starts and stops in a jerky way, the cause could be worn rollers, buildup in the tracks, or issues with the garage door motor.

Solution

Lubricate moving parts with a silicone-based lubricant and wipe down the tracks. If the problem doesn’t improve, the garage door opener may not have enough power, especially if you have a heavy door. We often recommend upgrading the opener or inspecting the motor settings to fix this common garage door issue.

9. Cracked or Missing Garage Door Seal

When the bottom seal of your garage door wears out, you’ll likely feel drafts, see pests getting in, or notice reduced energy efficiency. In some cases, it might even let in water after a storm.

Solution

Inspect the seal for cracks or gaps. If you can see daylight under the closed door or feel cold air coming through, it’s time to replace it. Next Level Garage Service carries replacement seals and can install them quickly to restore proper insulation.

10. Garage Door Opener Motor Keeps Running

If the garage door motor keeps running even after the door reaches the open or closed position, the limit settings likely need adjustment.

Solution

You might hear a humming noise or notice that the opener doesn’t stop when it should. Adjusting the limit settings usually solves this problem. If that doesn’t work, the issue might be with the logic board inside the opener. A trained technician can inspect the system and let you know if you need a repair or a replacement.

Maintenance Tips to Prevent Garage Door Problems

A little regular maintenance goes a long way when it comes to keeping your garage door working properly. Some maintenance tips we recommend include:

  • Lubricate moving parts with a silicone-based lubricant every six months.
  • While the door is in an open position, wipe the photo eye sensors with a soft cloth and check for misaligned sensors.
  • Open and close the door manually to test for smooth operation.
  • Listen for grinding noises or excessive noise that might be a sign of problems.
  • Replace remote batteries once a year.
  • Tighten loose hardware like bolts and nuts along the tracks.
  • Test the auto-reverse feature using a rubber mallet or block in the door’s path.

If you’re unsure how to do any of this, we’re happy to walk you through it during a service visit!

Can You Fix These Common Problems Yourself?

Some common problems are safe to tackle yourself. For example, you can replace remote batteries, clear obstructions from the tracks, clean sensors, and lubricate moving parts without professional assistance. You can also check for loose hardware and tighten loose bolts or nuts as needed. Just be careful not to overtighten or strip anything, and remember to use your owner’s manual for reference when adjusting settings or testing sensors.

However, for anything involving broken springs, damaged cables, or electrical repairs, it’s best to call a garage door technician. These aren’t safe for DIY repair because they involve handling tension, the weight of the door, and electrical components that can cause serious injury.
